A point to ponder concerning the understanding of synodality.
In the course of our parish life, some decisions require wide consultation with members, especially those that touch on matters of faith, worship, and community participation. These are areas where the shared wisdom of the faithful is vital.
However, there are also decisions that fall under the managerial prerogative of parish leadership. These decisions are mainly organizational or practical in nature, and do not affect the faith or doctrine of the Church. For example, the arrangement of the choir’s position in the church, relocation of equipment, and adjustments in parish facilities are managerial matters that can be resolved directly by the parish leadership for the sake of order and efficiency.
As Fr. Thomas Rausch, SJ, notes in Towards a Truly Catholic Church: An Ecclesiology for the Third Millennium (Liturgical Press, 2005):
“The Church needs both consultation and leadership. Consultation enriches, but leadership decides. Without leadership, decision-making becomes paralyzed; without consultation, it becomes arbitrary.”
Therefore, while the Church values participation and listening, not every adjustment requires broad consultation. What is entrusted to the leaders must be exercised responsibly, always guided by pastoral care and the good of the community.
